The care service pathways for dementia can be bewildering and complex – part of this research asked what is the ideal and what are the actual pathways.
The role of support workers and the respite need of carers is also examined. Support workers and carers play a crucial role in helping people with dementia be as independent as possible and live a meaningful life in the community.

Future health care journey
The project, ‘Consumer Journey Modelling’, mapped out the current state and future ideal state of the health care journey that people with cognitive decline and dementia experience in Australia.
Role of support workers
This study performed a systematic review of the dementia ‘key worker’ or ‘support worker’ model in Australia and internationally. The role of the key worker or support worker in dementia care is to assist people who have memory loss and dementia to continue to live meaningful lives in the community.
Respite program for carers
The Weavers Program is a respite program for carers of people with dementia that was developed using co-design and social innovation methodologies that involved both carers and service providers.
Primary care guide
This project team from University of Newcastle (NSW) recognised the importance of having a guideline for GPs caring for people with dementia that is up to date. When this project commenced in 2014 the current guidelines dated back to 2003 and their availability was not well known.
